Know What's Behind the Counter: What You Need to Know About 7-OH and Feel Free®

Walk into almost any vape shop, smoke shop, convenience store, or gas station, and you'll probably find shelves lined with products marketed as "natural," "legal," or designed to help you relax, focus, or boost your energy.

Two of the fastest-growing products are 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) and Feel Free®.

Many people assume that because they're sold over the counter, they must be safe. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

7-hydroxymitragynine, often shortened to "7-OH", is a compound derived from the kratom plant. While natural kratom leaves contain only small amounts of 7-OH, many products being sold today contain highly concentrated versions.

Why does that matter?

7-OH acts on many of the same opioid receptors in the brain as prescription opioids. That means it can produce feelings of euphoria and pain relief, but it also carries risks, including:

  • Dependence and addiction

  • Withdrawal symptoms

  • Sedation

  • Slowed breathing

  • Increased overdose risk, especially when mixed with other substances

Because of these concerns, the FDA has recommended scheduling concentrated and synthetic forms of 7-OH as a controlled substance. As of now, however, many of these products remain legally available in stores throughout the country.

What is Feel Free®?

Feel Free® is a small blue-bottled drink marketed as a wellness tonic and an alternative to alcohol. It contains kava and kratom and is often advertised as promoting relaxation, focus, and productivity.

While many consumers purchase it believing it's a healthier option, reports from users have painted a different picture.

Some individuals, including people in recovery, have reported developing dependence on the product, experiencing withdrawal symptoms, and spending hundreds of dollars each week to maintain their use.

In 2024, the manufacturer agreed to an $8.75 million class-action settlement related to allegations that consumers were not adequately warned about kratom-related risks. Additional litigation remains ongoing.

Why Are These Products Concerning?

One of the biggest dangers isn't just what's inside the products, it's how they're marketed.

Words like "natural," "herbal," and "plant-based" can give people a false sense of safety.

Many young adults, parents, and even individuals in recovery may not realize these products can have opioid-like effects or lead to physical dependence.

Because they're sold alongside energy drinks and supplements, they often don't raise the same red flags as illicit substances.

What Should Parents Know?

If you have teenagers or young adults in your life, it's worth having a conversation.

Many young people assume that if something is sold legally at a convenience store or vape shop, it must be safe.

  • Ask questions.

  • Stay informed.

  • Keep the conversation open without judgment.

Education is one of the strongest tools we have for prevention.
